This example is decorated with a group of sail boats against a blue and yellow ground.

Venetian harbor scenes were a popular design at Rookwood after 1904, and Carl Schmidt is considered the master at designing the Venetian Scenic Vellum. Characterized by a glaze of subtle pastel hues and boats floating in the harbor of Venice, these finely executed vases evoke the Luminist qualities of calm, reflective water and hazy skies found in the American landscape paintings dating from 1850 until 1870.

This vase is impressed on the underside with Rookwood factory marks, date code, and artist's monogram.
