Over a span of fifty years American artist Charles E. Martin (1910-1995) created nearly two hundred designs which went on to become covers for the New Yorker magazine. Martin would create a rough cartoon and consult with the magazine's art directors Jim Geherty and Lee Lorenz. After making the necessary adjustments, Martin produced this finished piece, titled Madison Ave Cafe, in watercolor on paper, which appears on the cover of the June 4, 1984 issue.
