Gudrun Baudisch Vase with Cityscape Motif 1
Height: 4 1/4 inches
Austrian, circa 1930

An unusual small glazed earthenware vase designed by Gudrun Baudisch for the Wiener Werkstätte. Like many of her Jazz Age contemporaries, Baudisch was inspired by the skylines developing in new urban landscapes and adapted the scenery on an intimate scale. The body of the vase features an allover motif of tall buildings stacked on top of one another, with what appear to be hazy plumes of smoke spreading across the sky. The pinched neck is highlighted by a band of saturated blue glaze, while the underside bear's the firm's marks, model number and artist's monogram.
